Britten CURLEW RIVER
The Holland Festival in Amsterdam
June 3-4, 2010
www.instantencore.com

"The American tenor Michael Slattery is the madwoman with his face painted in blood red, the director Olivier Py's favorite color. The look in his eyes and the repetitive movements are painful to watch and his expressions of bewilderment, pain and loss are captivating. Slattery sings his tragic lines with extraordinairy tones and a great variation in colors. Also the other parts were well cast."

Sing for Hope: An Evening of Art Songs and Arias
Wortham Theater Center
Houston, Texas
Saturday, September 19, 2009
8:00 pm
www.singforhope.org

"For the evening’s second half – somewhat deceptively described as 'art songs' – the cast draws from Broadway, pop, rock, folk, gospel and whatever else they feel like singing, in some cases downright stealing the show. This certainly was the case when tenor Michael Slattery walked onstage with a small box that revealed itself to be a weird musical instrument (sounding like a cross between an accordion and Celtic bagpipes) and then proceeded to stop all breath with his rendition of the old Joni Mitchell number 'Both Sides Now.'”

"Madness here isn't conveyed through histrionics, but through the more subtle virtuosity of a quick, changeable vocal line, sometimes raspy and almost whispered, sometimes at full power. Mr. Slattery provides all that, with madness to spare."
